1st January 2008 Malta and Cyprus join Euro zone Malta and Cyprus are the newcomers into Euro zone. On 1st January 2008, the Cypriot pound was converted at 0.585 to one Euro and the Maltese lira at 0.429.

As well as happened in other countries entered into Euro zone, there will be a period during which both currencies will be accepted. Prices will be displayed in both coinage until 30 September 2008. Central banks will exchange currencies free of change, two years for coins and ten for banknotes.

Special websites have been set up to guide the Cypriots and the Maltese in getting used to new currency.

The entry of Malta and Cyprus into Euro zone brings the number of countries using the euro to 15.
